How to Hire a Coach as a Freelance Writer

When I got started as a freelance writer, I didn’t think freelancing could ever be a real career — or that it could ever out-earn what I would have made as a TV writer.

In the last two years, I’ve gone from making $4,000/month as a freelance writer to $32,000+/month. Now, I know there are so many mistakes I made in the past that kept me from getting here sooner — and I’m here to share those with you!

As I’ve been creating freelancing content here on AmySuto.com and on my TikTok to help educate others on how to get into freelance writing (or any other field of freelancing, really!) I’ve realized there’s a need for more mentorship and coaching in this space to help others avoid the pitfalls I kept falling into early on in my career.

So, if you’re looking for some extra support, here are some things to think about before pursuing freelancing mentorship or hiring a freelancing coach:

Do I Need a Freelancing Coach to Help Me Become a Freelance Writer?

The short answer? No, you don’t. I have a ton of free resources (like my freelancing 101 guide!) to help you get started or fine-tune your existing freelance writing work.

The long answer? I wish I had personalized mentorship earlier on in my career as a freelancer. When my business partner saw me struggling with my workload, he became that mentor for me: he helped me redesign my pricing structure, raise my rates, and redo my marketing. That helped me make that huge leap from $4k to $32k in only two years. Without his eye on my systems and pricing strategy, it would have taken me much longer to get here.

As a working freelance writer, I know what pitfalls you’re dealing with. I know the heartache of having a client ghost you over an invoice. I know the red flags to pay attention to early on when developing a relationship with a client or company. I know what skills you have to build to not only sustain this work, but also to thrive.

I offer my time as a coach for freelance writers because I wish I had the guidance that I’m giving others. Freelancing can be lonely and isolating, and even as I tried to join business groups or read books about solopreneurship, nothing really helped me more than having that one-on-one attention.

For me, the missing piece was that outside perspective: it changed everything and unlocked a level of security and happiness I’ve never had before as a freelance writer, and so I feel driven to help others in the same way I’ve received help!

How to Hire a Coach as a Freelance Writer

Before you begin working with a coach or professional of any kind, it’s important to think about what your goals are and how a coach or mentor can help you accomplish those goals:

  • Do you want someone to hold you accountable to get started on your freelancing journey?

  • Are you stuck on how to find better clients whose projects/companies you believe in?

  • Are you looking for advice on how to market your skills and how to approach your “personal brand” without feeling like you’re betraying who you really are?

When you’re looking to hire a freelance writing coach, try and find someone who has experience in the things that are most top of mind for you. They should also be giving advice on their social media channels and blog that rings true for you. If you don’t agree with their advice or their style of presenting their work, then move on.
