Republic of Pie Review: North Hollywood’s Always-Popping Cafe

Writers gathered at the Make Writing Your Job meetup on the patio at Republic of Pie in North Hollywood

The Make Writing Your Job crew, assembled under the Republic of Pie banner.

Every neighborhood has a café that functions as its living room. In North Hollywood, that’s Republic of Pie — and the operative word is always. Always popping, always half-full of screenwriters and half-full of people about to meet their new favorite collaborator.

Republic of Pie is a great place to co-work AND a great place to meet people, which is a rarer combination than it sounds. We hosted one of our Make Writing Your Job subscriber meetups on the patio, and the venue did what it always does: made six writers with laptops look like the most natural thing in the world. (It was. It is.)

The Verdict on Republic of Pie

  • Best for: NoHo co-working days; meeting collaborators; meetups with built-in dessert
  • The move: Claim a table, order a coffee and (obviously) pie, stay all afternoon
  • Where: Magnolia Blvd, North Hollywood (Google Maps) · republicofpie.com

Republic of Pie holds down the Valley wing of my best of LA list — and joins Bricks & Scones, Re/Creation, and Case Study in Portland on the growing list of Make Writing Your Job clubhouses.
