Q Specialty Coffee Review: The Yuzu Matcha Worth the Sugar

An iced matcha drink with a whisk, like the treat-tier matcha at Q Specialty Coffee in San Francisco

Every matcha snob needs a place where the snobbery clocks out. Mine is Q Specialty Coffee on California Street.

Q Specialty sits lower on my Matcha Snob Scale, and I mean that with love: this is where you go when you’re craving something matcha-forward but sweeter and more treat-like — and where the yuzu matcha and the cloud matcha are really, really good at being exactly that.

What to Order at Q Specialty

The yuzu matcha is the headliner: citrus-bright over green-tea depth, the drink I’d hand anyone who thinks matcha is only for people with bamboo whisks and opinions (hi). The cloud matcha is the softer, creamier route, and there’s a strawberry matcha for maximum dessert energy.

Purists will sniff. Purists are missing out on the yuzu. (Our receipts say we’ve also road-tested the N2 Mango — organic mango over nitro cold brew and jasmine tea — for the days when someone in the party still drinks caffeine the old way.)

The Verdict on Q Specialty Coffee

  • Best for: Treat-tier matcha; sweet-tooth days; matcha dates with non-purists
  • My order: Yuzu matcha or cloud matcha
  • Where: 3490 California St (Google Maps) — across from Proposition Chicken, which is not a coincidence in our routing

Q Specialty holds the treat tier on my best matcha in San Francisco ranking; for the opposite end of the scale, start with Constance’s fresh-milled koicha.
