Press Release: WRITE FOR MONEY AND POWER by Amy Suto Available Now

Bestselling author Amy Suto urges writers to ditch the ‘starving artist’ mindset in new book, ‘Write for Money and Power’

Even with AI fears dominating and writers’ room shrinking, Suto argues there has never been a more lucrative time to be a writer

San Francisco, Calif. (January 12, 2025) - Bestselling author, Substacker, and seven-figure ghostwriter Amy Suto has announced the release of Write for Money and Power: The Anti-Starving Artist’s Guide to Becoming a Seven-Figure Writer, a new book challenging long-held beliefs about writing as a low-paid profession.

A no-nonsense blueprint for ditching the starving artist mindset and building a seven-figure writing business, the book was inspired by Suto’s own journey to reaching $1 million in lifetime revenue for her writing career, all by the age of 31.

Suto is a freelance memoir ghostwriter who has written memoirs in partnership with Olympians, CEOs, and NBA players. She is also the founder of the bestselling Substack, Make Writing Your Job. Ranked in the top 25 on the business leaderboard list, Make Writing Your Job is a community of more than 28,000 writers and grosses nearly $200,000 for Suto annually.

“As a young writer, I was told not to expect a lot of money doing what I love,” Suto said. “But that mindset is out-of-date and frankly false. We are living in one of the most lucrative times to be a writer. The Creator Economy is projected to surpass $480 billion by 2027*, so there is money to be had for writers who are ready to go after opportunities and think more like a Creator CEO.”

A graduate of the University of Southern California’s prestigious film school, Suto stayed in Los Angeles to pursue her dream of becoming a screenwriter but became disillusioned by small paychecks and the lack of control over her own IP. She started freelancing between writers’ rooms but made a career pivot in 2020 to focus on freelance writing full time.

Suto’s success reflects a broader shift as writers increasingly leave traditional publishing and media careers in favor of creating their own paths through direct-to-audience platforms like Substack and self-publishing. Substack now counts more than 5 million paid subscriptions**, and the company has reported more than 50 writers earn more than $1 million annually through the platform alone***.

At the same time, the global self-publishing market surpassed $1.8 billion in 2024, signaling a growing demand for creator-owned work and revenue models outside traditional gatekeepers.

In her new book Write for Money and Power, Suto outlines the financial benefits of foregoing the traditional gatekeepers and lays out practical strategies and mindset shifts writers can use to build a highly paid career on their own terms, including a roadmap designed to help writers scale toward seven figures in as little as 12 months.

“This is the book I wish I had when I was first starting out,” Suto added. “We’ve all been told to wait patiently for our shot, whether it’s a book deal or a writing staff job. But my own experience has taught me you have to stop waiting and start building. It is incredible what can happen when you control your own IP and revenue.”

Write for Money and Power: The Anti-Starving Artist’s Guide to Becoming a Seven-Figure Writer is available now on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Bookshop.org.
