This Book Started as a TV Pilot

The first version of this story wasn’t a novel at all. I wrote Let Me Be Your Ghost as a TV pilot back in 2017, during my Hollywood years, and took it into meetings with producers who read it, gave notes, and pushed me to think more deeply about what the story could be. I’m still so appreciative of the people who gave their time to help me rethink this book at every stage. Writing is a solitary job right up until you count how many brains helped you build the thing.

The premise survived every rewrite and every format change: what if the FBI used ghostwriters as their agents?

I find that idea so funny, and a little cheeky, because I’m a real-life memoir ghostwriter — the invisible person in the room who gets paid to ask powerful people about their secrets. (I’ve interviewed people caught up in actual government conspiracies. I’m not allowed to tell you which ones.) I love spy fiction, I’ve written murder mysteries before, and this book let me stack all of it inside a slow-burn romance.

Why I Set It in the Bay Area

Years before I lived here, I made several trips to the Bay Area just to stand in the places I thought would end up in the story. What got me was the fog. The whole region has this moody, dreamy, slightly haunted quality, like the weather itself is in on the plot. I ~ love ~ a vibey setting, and nowhere does vibes like the Bay. The research trips clearly worked, by the way. I live in San Francisco now.

In the years since those trips, the tech industry has become a monolith here, for better and for worse. It has swallowed so much of the city, and in some ways it has made a mockery of some of what San Francisco once stood for, the hippie era and the peace-and-love movement — especially now that defense tech startups are the darlings of the moment. I’m not making a statement, I promise. Observing is just what I do best, and this novel is where nine years of those observations went to live.

The novel got a young billionaire with a surveillance empire, an estate wrapped in fog, and a ghostwriter who notices everything. (Draw whatever conclusions you like. I’m just the ghostwriter.)

Zooming out from my own book for a second, because this part applies to every author on your shelf.

Preorders are disproportionately powerful. Every single one counts toward launch-week sales, and launch week is when retailer algorithms decide whether to put a book in front of strangers. Bookstores look at preorder numbers when they choose what to stock. A strong preorder run can bend a book’s entire trajectory before the book physically exists.

So, my standing advice, and it applies to every writer whose work you love: when an author you like announces a book, preorder it.
