Book Review: Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

I ghostwrite memoirs for a living, so memoir is the genre I read the most and hold to the highest standard. Man’s Search for Meaning is one of the most impactful memoirs I’ve ever read. It made my list of favorite memoirs as a ghostwriter years ago and has never come close to losing the spot.

Viktor Frankl was a Viennese psychiatrist who survived the Nazi concentration camps, including Auschwitz. The first half of the book is his account of those years, written with a clinician’s restraint that somehow makes it hit harder. The second half introduces logotherapy, the school of psychology he founded on what he witnessed: that the primary human drive is meaning, and that the people who endured the unendurable were so often the ones who still had a why.

What I Loved About Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl

It’s an incredible meditation on happiness and the meaning of life — I know how large that sounds, and I mean every word of it. Frankl earned every insight in this book at a price no author should ever have to pay, and he spends that authority with astonishing care: no bitterness, no sermon, just observation after observation about what keeps a human being human.

As a memoirist, I hold this book up as proof of what the form can do. One person’s specific, unthinkable experience becomes something a stranger can build a life on.

What I Didn’t Love About Man’s Search for Meaning

Nothing. There are books you critique and books you simply hand to people. This is the second kind.

A book everyone should read — I wrote that on Goodreads in 2023, and it’s still the whole review. It’s short, you can read it in a weekend, and it will stay with you for years.
