Celebrity memoirs are my professional beat — I ghostwrite memoirs for a living, which means I read them the way a chef eats at other restaurants. Most celebrity memoirs are fine. A few are cynical. And then there’s Born a Crime, which is the exception I hand to people as proof of what the form can do.

The spoiler-free setup: Trevor Noah was born in apartheid South Africa to a Black mother and a white father — which made his existence literally illegal. The book is a collection of stories from that childhood: church marathons, tossed-from-moving-vehicle escapes, hustles, punishments, and the fierce, hilarious, devout mother at the center of all of it.

What I Loved About Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

It’s genuinely funny AND genuinely heartbreaking, and the balance between the two is what makes it really special. That balance is the single hardest thing to pull off in memoir — I know because engineering it is literally my job. Lean too funny and the pain reads as bit material; lean too heavy and the humor feels like deflection. Noah walks the line so naturally you forget there’s a line, and the heart underneath every joke is what stays with you.

It’s also secretly a masterclass in structure: each chapter is a self-contained story with its own setup and payoff, which is exactly how I coach memoir clients to think about their material. Stories first. Chronology is overrated.

What I Didn’t Love About Born a Crime

That the sequel doesn’t exist yet. His mother deserves her own trilogy.
