Pirate romantasy is a criminally under-supplied subgenre, so when The Ever King surfaced in my Kindle Unlimited recommendations, I boarded without asking many questions. The verdict: a very solid voyage — I just kept waiting for rougher water.

The setup: Erik, the scarred king of the Ever Kingdom, has spent years imprisoned beneath the waves in his own kingdom, plotting vengeance on the man who killed his father. When that man’s daughter unknowingly breaks the chains holding the Ever, Erik makes her the pawn in his revenge. Pirates, sirens, and fae with a Viking streak — he’s vicious, she’s innocent, and you’ve heard this tagline before. It’s a good tagline.

What I Loved About The Ever King by L.J. Andrews

The world. L.J. Andrews’ sea kingdom is a genuinely fun sandbox, the premise gives the romance real friction from page one, and the whole book knows exactly what flavor it’s serving. I enjoyed the entire voyage and went looking for book two when it ended — which is always the honest tell.

What I Didn’t Love About The Ever King

The danger, or the lack of it. For a story about a vicious pirate king, the menace stays surprisingly theoretical — I wanted more from the villain, more twists, and more moments where the characters were up against something that could genuinely cost them. The stakes get announced more than they get felt. It’s my recurring craft sermon: menace needs receipts.

Final Thoughts on The Ever King

A very solid pirate romantasy on Kindle Unlimited, and I’m continuing the series. The pirate shelf is thin, which makes this an easy pick for the ship-and-grudge crowd — it worked far better for me than Deep as the Sky, Red as the Sea, the literary pirate novel I reviewed and bounced off. My final score: 3 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do I recommend this book? 👍 Yes — hoist the sails, temper the peril expectations.
