Book Review: The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest

If you want to change your life, read this book. I wrote that line on Goodreads in August 2022, and I’ve had four years to walk it back. I haven’t.
The Mountain Is You is Brianna Wiest’s book about self-sabotage: why we do it (old coping mechanisms that once kept us safe), what it costs us, and how to stop treating our own potential like a threat. The mountain of the title is you — your patterns, your fears, your comfort — and the climb is the work of getting out of your own way.
What I Loved About The Mountain Is You by Brianna Wiest
Some of the best advice I’ve ever gotten came from these pages. I read it in the middle of the hardest health rebuild of my life (the long stretch after my rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis, when I was overhauling my habits, my stress levels, and most of my daily routines), and a book about getting out of your own way lands differently when your own way has a documented medical cost.
Wiest writes in essays, and the good ones read like a friend who loves you enough to skip the flattery. This is advice that assumes you’re capable of hearing it.
What I Didn’t Love About The Mountain Is You
Nothing about the book itself. The warning label belongs to the reader: this only works if you let it work. Wiest’s advice hits hard, and when it hits somewhere tender, your ego will start negotiating — that chapter is clearly about other people. You have to set the ego down and take the hit. That part is on you, and it takes more mental strength than reading usually asks for.
Final Thoughts on The Mountain Is You
My Goodreads review ended with a question: are you ready to start the climb? Four years later I’ll sharpen it — the mountain doesn’t get smaller while you wait. And if you want the science underneath the patterns this book calls out, The Body Keeps the Score pairs with it well.
My final score: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Do I recommend this book? 👍 Yes — with your ego checked at the door.
