Book Review: The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer

The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer book cover — reviewed by Amy Suto

My entire Goodreads review of The Untethered Soul is one sentence long. There was nothing to argue with, so I didn’t.

I read it in May 2019, the same year I did my 200-hour yoga teacher training, which tells you roughly where my head was at. Plenty of books from that season of my life have faded. This one hasn’t.

Michael Singer’s premise is disarmingly simple: you are not the voice in your head, you’re the one who hears it. From that single observation, the book walks toward what he calls unconditional happiness — the decision to stop letting the inner narrator set the terms of your life. Along the way it covers why we keep old pain on retainer, what letting go actually costs, and what stays possible once you stop guarding the wound.

What I Loved About The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer

The simplicity. This is advice that stays simple enough to survive contact with a bad day: notice the voice, decline to board every train of thought it sends, choose openness anyway. Simple on the page, enormous in practice — and I say that as someone who has read a shelf and a half of mindfulness books, plenty of which bury the point under vocabulary. Singer hands it to you in plain English and trusts you to do the work.

What I Didn’t Love About The Untethered Soul

Genuinely nothing — five stars and a one-sentence review is how little I had to complain about. Fair warning, though: the early chapters describe the voice in your head with unsettling accuracy, and the voice in your head will have opinions about that.

Final Thoughts on The Untethered Soul

Of all the mindfulness books I’ve read, this is the one I recommend first: simple advice for unconditional happiness that holds up outside the meditation cushion. And if you like your inner work with more myth and wildness in it, Women Who Run With the Wolves lives on the same shelf for me.

My final score: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do I recommend this book? 👍 Yes — the mindfulness book I hand people first.
