Because I always tell you the truth on this blog, here it is: Heat of the Everflame is where the Kindred’s Curse Saga started losing me. Not dramatically. Just… slowly, the way a balloon loses air.

As always, zero spoilers: this is book three, Diem is deeper in the machinery of Descended politics than ever, and the stakes are officially enormous. The problem is the gap between how big the stakes are and how big they feel.

What I Loved About Heat of the Everflame by Penn Cole

There are some genuinely strong scenes in here — a handful of moments where the character work that carried Glow of the Everflame comes roaring back, and you remember why you committed to a multi-book saga in the first place. Penn Cole can still land an emotional beat, and the relationships at the heart of this series remain its best special effect.

What I Didn’t Love About Heat of the Everflame

The tension deflates. The fun that powered the first two books goes missing for long stretches, and the book idles where it should accelerate. I kept waiting for it to grab me the way the first two did. It never quite got its grip.

Final Thoughts on Heat of the Everflame

The complicating factor is the series itself: the saga’s finale was delayed well past its original release date — long enough that I honestly wasn’t sure I’d continue. (As I post this, book four finally has a date on the calendar: September 2026.) If you’re two books deep, you’ll want to see this one through, and all three are on Kindle Unlimited. If you’re brand new, start with my review of Spark of the Everflame and know what you’re signing up for. Am I preordering the finale? Ask me in September.

My final score: 3 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do I recommend this book? 👍 Yes — for readers already invested in the saga. This is not where you start.
