I gave Phantasma a full five stars — gothic house, devil’s-game trials, that delicious sense of place — so Enchantra was one of my most anticipated sequels of the year. I went in with a cleared evening and gothic-manor expectations.

The spoiler-free setup: the Wicked Games world continues with a new deadly game and familiar stakes — magic with a price, a romance tangled in the rules, and Smith’s signature gothic-glam atmosphere. If you loved book one, the ingredients you loved are all here.

What I Loved About Enchantra by Kaylie Smith

It’s a solid read, full stop. Smith’s prose stays atmospheric and quick, the romance beats deliver, and fans of Phantasma’s vibe will find plenty to enjoy — I finished it in two sittings, which is its own kind of review.

What I Didn’t Love About Enchantra

What made Phantasma sing for me was its sense of place — that house felt like a character with opinions — and its clean, escalating structure. Enchantra has less of both. The setting never develops the same gravity, and the story leans on the first book’s blueprint hard enough that it reads like a repeat instead of a reinvention. Sequels get to be bigger, stranger, or deeper; this one mostly chose “again.”
