The hardest reviews aren’t the raves or the pans — they’re the shrugs. The Witch Collector is a book I enjoyed, read straight through, and closed with a ‘huh. That was fine.’ Let me try to explain the shrug, because the craft story here is interesting.

The setup is genuinely good: every harvest moon, the Witch Collector rides into the valley and takes one villager to serve the immortal Frost King forever. Raina Bloodgood has been passed over for twenty-four years, and she’s counting on being passed over again — because her plan is to kill the Frost King and the Witch Collector who took her sister. Then Collecting Day arrives with a bigger threat, and her revenge gets complicated: the man she swore to slay may be the only one who can help her save her sister.

What I Loved About The Witch Collector by Charissa Weaks

The prose. Charissa Weaks writes really solid sentences — controlled and confident — and the premise is set up with care. The bones here are professional-grade. As a writer, I notice that, and it kept me reading to the end.

What I Didn’t Love About The Witch Collector

The spark. The dialogue reads flat next to the prose around it, the characters never quite caught fire for me, and the plot goes roughly where you’d guess. Nothing is broken — everything is just a little under-seasoned, which might be the most frustrating note a book can earn. I wanted to fall in love and stayed politely interested instead.

Final Thoughts on The Witch Collector

I’m glad I read it, and the sequel is on my list — first installments are sometimes just an author clearing her throat. But if you’re choosing your next romantasy and haven’t worked through my best-of-Kindle-Unlimited list, start there. (The Witch Collector is on Kindle Unlimited too, so trying it costs you nothing extra.)

My final score: 3 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do I recommend this book? 👍 Yes — if this exact premise calls to you. Otherwise start higher up the list.
