Here’s my whole review of Spark of the Everflame in three questions. Is it groundbreaking? No. Is it wildly original? Not really. Did I open book two the minute I finished it? Immediately, yes.

The spoiler-free setup: Diem Bellator is a healer from a poor mortal village in a world colonized by the gods and ruled by their cruel offspring, the Descended. When her mother disappears, Diem is pulled into the dark world of Descended royalty and a murky, simmering rebellion — all while the dying king’s handsome, enigmatic heir watches her every move. It’s book one of the Kindred’s Curse Saga, and it wears its slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers heart on its sleeve.

What I Loved About Spark of the Everflame by Penn Cole

The character work. Penn Cole gives Diem real interiority, and the moral dilemmas in this book have actual teeth — characters get cornered into choices where every option costs something, which is exactly where fantasy starts earning my loyalty. The enemies-to-lovers tension builds patiently and lands well, and having written a slow burn myself, I respect an author who trusts readers to wait.

What I Didn’t Love About Spark of the Everflame

It’s slow, and it knows it. The pacing asks for patience in a way you have to be in the mood for, and none of the archetypes will surprise you if you’ve read a shelf of these. I went in wanting comfort food rather than cuisine, so that didn’t bother me much — but if you need a twist every chapter, this book will test you.

Final Thoughts on Spark of the Everflame

A solid start and an easy book to have a good time with. It’s on Kindle Unlimited, and it earned a spot on my list of the best romantasy books on Kindle Unlimited — with the honest caveat that the series wobbles later (my review of book three gets into it). Up next: my review of Glow of the Everflame, the strongest book in the saga so far.

My final score: 3 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Spice rating: 2 out of 5 🌶️ 🌶️ (a very slow burn — the spice arrives later in the series)

Do I recommend this book? 👍 Yes — if you like your burns slow and your rebellions murky.
