Book Review: Stress Less, Accomplish More by Emily Fletcher

Stress Less, Accomplish More by Emily Fletcher book cover — reviewed by Amy Suto

In February 2021 I was one month past a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis, and “lower your stress” had just been promoted from wellness suggestion to medical instruction. I picked up Stress Less, Accomplish More ready to be the most motivated student Emily Fletcher ever had.

Which is why the three stars sting a little. There are great concepts in this book. I just had to dig them out from under the sales pitch.

Fletcher is a former Broadway performer who founded Ziva Meditation, and her pitch targets high achievers: a fifteen-minute, twice-daily practice blending mindfulness, meditation, and intention-setting, sold on performance benefits (better sleep, better focus, better output) rather than incense and silence.

What I Loved About Stress Less, Accomplish More by Emily Fletcher

The core concepts are genuinely good for people who run hot: meditation framed for high achievers who need to chill out and will only do it if the pitch includes a return on investment. (Hi. It’s me.) The fifteen-minute container makes a daily practice feel achievable instead of aspirational, and for the stressed-out overachiever this book is aimed at, the ideas are worth knowing.

What I Didn’t Love About Stress Less, Accomplish More

The book keeps interrupting itself to sell you something. Client testimonials, program plugs, success stories from the author’s studio — they pile up until long stretches read like the middle of a webinar. And look, I plug my own projects on this very blog, so I’m not anti-plug. I’m anti-ratio. I kept wishing the book spent those pages on the reader’s practice instead of the author’s brand.

Final Thoughts on Stress Less, Accomplish More

Three stars is where great concepts meets constant upsell on my scorecard. If stress is running your show, take the ideas and the fifteen minutes — and for the research side of what stress actually does to a body, Burnout is the stronger book. I also keep a running list of stress-reduction tactics for freelancers over here.

My final score: 3 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do I recommend this book? 🤷 A qualified maybe — great ideas, heavy sales pitch.
