Freida McFadden Books in Order: Every Book + What’s Next

Freida McFadden is a doctor who specializes in brain injury, and she self-published her first book on Amazon in 2013, while still working in medicine full time. Thirteen years later, her publisher says her 29 books have sold more than 90 million copies worldwide, and the movie version of The Housemaid made about $400 million at the box office. If you just closed one of her thrillers at 2am and want the rest, here is every Freida McFadden book in order.
I haven’t reviewed a McFadden book on this blog yet, so this page has no ratings from me. It has the publication order, the one thriller series you need to read in sequence, the short stories, her newest releases, and what’s coming in 2027. I write thrillers too, and my own romantic thriller comes out November 18, 2026, so it gets a cameo at the end. No spoilers anywhere on this page.
Freida McFadden has published 29 books since 2013. Her thrillers include one series, The Housemaid, which you should read in order: The Housemaid, The Housemaid’s Secret, and The Housemaid Is Watching, plus a short story, The Housemaid’s Wedding. Every other McFadden thriller is a standalone you can read in any order. Her newest book is The Witch (October 6, 2026), and The Sleepwalker arrives March 23, 2027.
Let’s dive in.

The Housemaid Series in Order
The Housemaid (2022)
The Housemaid’s Secret (2023)
The Housemaid’s Wedding (2024, a short story)
The Housemaid Is Watching (2024)
McFadden says on her FAQ page that you don’t have to read them in order, but each book spoils the ones before it, so start with The Housemaid. The wedding short story came out after book three and slots in after book two (either spot works). I broke the whole series down, with both movies, in The Housemaid series in order.
Which Freida McFadden Book Should You Read First?
If you want the one everyone else has read, start with The Housemaid. It has about 4 million Goodreads ratings, roughly double any other McFadden book. If you’d rather start with a standalone, here are her ten most-rated on Goodreads, with ratings counts rounded and averages as of October 12, 2026:
| Standalone | Year | Goodreads ratings | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Never Lie | 2022 | 1.79 million | 4.07 |
| The Inmate | 2022 | 1.23 million | 3.99 |
| The Teacher | 2024 | 1.17 million | 3.88 |
| The Boyfriend | 2024 | 1.16 million | 4.03 |
| Ward D | 2023 | 773,000 | 3.96 |
| The Tenant | 2025 | 763,000 | 3.83 |
| The Locked Door | 2021 | 759,000 | 3.97 |
| The Crash | 2025 | 671,000 | 3.69 |
| The Coworker | 2023 | 667,000 | 3.73 |
| Dear Debbie | 2026 | 664,000 | 3.93 |
Never Lie leads on both counts: the most ratings and the highest average of the group. The softest average in the top ten belongs to The Crash, for what it’s worth.

Baby City (2015), co-written with Kelley Stoddard, is a standalone in the same medical vein.

Is Freida McFadden a Real Doctor?
Yes. She is a physician who specializes in brain injury, and she wrote her early books around her medical work. Freida McFadden is a pen name. She shared her real name, Sara Cohen, in an April 2026 interview with USA Today.
What to Read After Freida McFadden
When you run out of McFadden, my books like The Housemaid list has ten twisty domestic thrillers, rated where I’ve read them. For the unreliable-narrator end of the shelf, try books like Gone Girl, and for thrillers with a love story running through them, romantic thriller books.
🌁 Let Me Be Your Ghost by Amy Suto (Yes, Me)
This book is about… Lola Whitman ghostwrites memoirs for powerful men and feeds their secrets to the FBI. One last book buys her freedom. Then her final target, billionaire Ezekiel Crane, finds her first. He’s hiding something. So is she.
Subgenre: romantic thriller (billionaire romance with murder-mystery bones).
What I hope you’ll love about it: McFadden readers come for a woman walking into a house full of secrets. Lola is my version: a ghostwriter moving into a billionaire’s estate to write his life story, with a few secrets of her own. It comes out November 18, 2026, in ebook, paperback, and hardcover.
Preorder it anywhere and I’ll send you my unreleased book, How to Write a Memoir, free. Claim your preorder gift here.
