I worked in the real Hollywood long enough to be professionally suspicious of novels about fictional Hollywood — the glamour usually rings false. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is one of the ones that gets it right, which is part of why BookTok has kept it on every list for years.
The spoiler-free premise: an aging screen legend with seven marriages behind her picks an unknown journalist to hear her life story, and the question of why her hums under every chapter until the answer arrives.
What I Loved About The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
The character development, honestly. Evelyn is the whole show — ruthless, glamorous, self-aware about the machinery of fame in a way that felt true to the industry I knew. And the twists are good ones: not shock-for-shock’s-sake, but reveals that reframe what you thought you were reading.
It’s also exactly the right weight for what it is — a summer read that isn’t heavy or dense, but leaves you with more than most summer reads do.
What I Didn’t Love About The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
The opening is slow. Genuinely slow — if I hadn’t heard the chorus of recommendations, the first stretch might have lost me. Push through it. The book repays the patience.
Final Thoughts on The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
A slow start, a glamorous middle, and twists that earn their keep. An enjoyable, impressive summer read that deserves its long BookTok reign.
My final score: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
