There’s something about Jordan Harper’s prose that zips you across the page — short sentences with knuckles, images that land and get out. I lived in Los Angeles for the better part of a decade, and nobody writing right now captures the gritty underbelly of that city the way Harper does: as both an indictment of LA and a strange, real understanding of its fabric.

The spoiler-free setup: a handful of Los Angeles strivers — people orbiting the city’s money and power without holding any — get pulled into the fallout of a single shattering incident, and the book follows the shockwave up and down the city’s food chain. Saying more would rob you; the discovery is the ride.

What I Loved About A Violent Masterpiece by Jordan Harper

Here’s the thing I keep telling people: Harper’s books are oddly optimistic. They’re noir crime novels with a heart and a chance of redemption baked in, and that’s a genuinely rare combination — noir usually trades hope for style. Harper keeps both. Even under layers of dirt and crime, you get glimpses of actual heroism, and seeing that flicker in a world this dark is a beautiful thing. I walk away from his books feeling lucky to have found them.

As a former Angeleno and a former TV writer, I’ll also say: the Hollywood material in here is painfully, hilariously accurate. He knows exactly which vein to open.

What I Didn’t Love About A Violent Masterpiece

That it ended. My only real complaint about Jordan Harper is that he can’t write these as fast as I read them.

Final Thoughts on A Violent Masterpiece by Jordan Harper

My final score: 5 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Do I recommend this book? 👍 A thousand times yes.

If you haven’t read Harper yet, start with Everybody Knows (reviewed here, also loved) and then come straight back for this one. My romantasy-heavy reviews shelf makes room for crime this good.
