There is no sleep for me until I finish this damn book series. None. I keep announcing “just a few more pages” to an empty room, and then the birds start chirping outside, and I hear them, and I keep reading anyway.

I’ve already confessed what A Court of Mist and Fury did to my sleep schedule, so consider A Court of Wings and Ruin (ACOWAR to its friends) a continuation of the pattern. This is book three, so the premise stays vague on purpose: the war the first two books promised finally arrives, and everything Sarah J. Maas set up starts getting cashed in. If you’re new to the series, begin with my review of book one — do not start in the middle of a war.

What I Loved About A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas

Forty million copies of Sarah J. Maas’ books have sold, and this is the series where you can feel why. ACOWAR is plenty emotional and plenty surprising: the big beats hit harder because two full books earned them, and the surprises still got me even though I was actively trying to out-guess her. (I plot books for a living. I still lost.)

What I Didn’t Love About A Court of Wings and Ruin

It’s maybe not quite as expertly plotted as the first two books — ACOMAF in particular is a plotting masterclass, and this one occasionally trades that precision for sheer scale. That’s the entire complaint. It cost the book a star and none of my sleep.

Final Thoughts on A Court of Wings and Ruin

Do yourself a favor and add this page turner to your Kindle, then clear your morning schedule. And when you come up for air, know that the series takes a cozy little detour next — my review of A Court of Frost and Starlight explains before you buy it expecting another war.

My final score: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
