I’ll admit: the term “web3” is pretty pretentious. You might have heard it in reference to the new wave of blockchain-based innovations: NFTs, cryptocurrency, and the rise of metaverse games and other experiences that all have their roots in Decentralized Finance (otherwise known as DeFi.)

Unlike web2 which was popularized by the rise of social media and the sharing economy, web3 is all about the Creator Economy, and simple monetization strategies that transcend borders or traditional currency.

So, why care about all this? Simple: revenue potential in the metaverse could be close to $800 billion by 2024.

Why Creativity is King in Web3

If you’ve hung out with me on this here blog for a bit, you’ll know that I’m a huge fan of the rise of the Creator Economy. So much so that I’ve basically abandoned my work in Hollywood to jump ship and sail off into the greater Creator Economy waters. I’ve traveled the world and made a great living off of my work in the Creator Economy, so I know how powerful it is.

As robots serve us our expensive salads and take over more jobs, humans will have more time to make stuff for a living. Content is good for the economy: a concentration of eyeballs on a platform can be monetized, and the metaverse offers a unique chance for artists to get their work out on an even larger scale.

I was listening to a podcast interview on The Future of Money with the Sandbox founder, and the conversation hit on an important point: these metaverse worlds rely on creators to bring value — and long-term playability — to their audience. Without compelling experiences and stories, players will move on to another metaverse game or experience. If you can harness the power of a compelling story, however, you can capture users and keep them coming back and engaging with your platform.

This has always been the case, from Hollywood to beyond. HBO’s Euphoria raked in huge numbers, and its season two finale beat out Game of Thrones’ finale stats, proving that you don’t need a huge budget and flashy effects to capture a wide audience. You need a compelling story and thoughtful characters.

My Work as a Writer in the Metaverse/NFT/Web3 Spaces

I’ve always been a creative soulmate for startups and other innovators looking to launch their dreams. Last year, I dove headfirst in the web3 space as I saw how the innovations could bring about some really cool stuff.

Since then, I’ve worked with some huge companies doubling down in these spaces. I’ve worked with NFT collections to craft epic stories to release to their fans, I’ve created viral marketing collateral, and I’ve created foundational copy for startups fresh out of accelerators like YC and TechStars.

On complex projects that demand a lot of copy, I also bring on my team of writers to help me generate a ton of content, fast. We’ve helped turn around a ton of high-quality content for projects that needed a lot of brainpower to get going.

The reason why web3 projects are hiring top creative freelance talent is because the best projects know that story is everything. Without that creative spark, you’re just noise on the Internet.
